HANG ON BACK REFUGIUM – A VITAL EQUIPMENT FOR TANKS

Fishes are among the most underrated pets, especially when compared with some of their famous enemies like cats or dogs. People underestimate the power of fish and always keep them insufficient attention. Only a few avid fish keepers know what it feels like to have fish as pets. Some of them believe that a pet fish can make their life better and healthier.

Being a fish keeper isn’t easy. You need to choose the best for them. If you have tiny fishes in your fish aquarium, prefer getting a hang on back refugium, which is an excellent addition to your house aquarium.

WHAT IS A HANG ON BACK REFUGIUM?

A hang on back refugium is an excellent insertion to your fish tank. It is primarily used to keep smaller fish. It can also assist live rocks and plants, microorganisms, and some sand if you want to. This also acts as a natural biological filtration.

A hang on the back filter is standard equipment used in fish aquariums. These filters are highly adaptable in their usability as they are capable of using three types of filters together. In case you are planning to add it to your tank, go ahead!

HOW DOES A HANG-ON-BACK SUMP WORKS?

As the name suggests, A hang on back sump is placed in the tank’s upper portion(edge). There’s an inlet hose present that pulls up the water from the aquarium into the hang on refugium. This water now passes through the filter before moving back to the tank from an overflow spill.

WHAT SIZE HANG ON BACK FILTER DO I NEED?

An excellent sump filter should be efficient enough to go through all the water in the aquarium about three to four times an hour. Precisely, A filter with an output of 30 gallons per hour is the best for a small 10-gallon tank.

ADVANTAGES OF A SUMP FILTER

The most common advantages of these filters are:

  • You can easily find them in stores as they are super popular.
  • They’re straightforward to set up.
  • The filter media is replaceable & you can do it.
  • They promote oxygen for fish and are very affordable at the same time.

HOW TO SET UP AND MAINTAIN A HANG-ON BACK FILTER?

Setting up and operating this filter is an easy task and won’t take more than five minutes in total.

Here is how you set it up-

  • First, add the media filter. You’ll find individual baskets in some filters which inform where each filter should go.
  • Now, hang the filter in its place. You’ll find a cut in the fish tank lid which is the perfect place for the filter. In case you don’t see any dent on the top, then you can decide where to place it.
  • Make sure to prime the filter. Priming means fitting the filter with water. We recommend getting a filter that has self-priming methods.
  • Finally, plug the filter and start.

You should clean the filter once it starts getting dirty and not before that. Clean every part of it thoroughly to ensure cleanliness. For this, take the sponge and clean all the hidden parts that are hard to clean manually. When the sponge is out, you can replace the filter.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A hang back filter can be great if you have small tanks as they don’t require a lot of maintenance and are easy and affordable. Get a filter that provides all the amenities for the well-being of your fish. Fishes are silent pets. But, as an owner, it’s your responsibility to understand their needs and implement them wisely.
